Notes from Underground was a group exhibition initiated by Julia Seifried and Philipp Neßler and presented in the former ice cellar beneath the Kupferberg Terraces in Mainz in 2024. The exhibition brought together 17 current and former students of the Mainz University of Fine Arts. The exhibition was developed in direct relation to the architecture of the vaulted underground spaces, with the participating artists responding to their material and spatial conditions.
For Notes from Underground, Seifried and Neßler presented two works that engaged with the material and spatial conditions of the former ice cellar. Baustellenidylle by Julia Seifried and Wall by Philipp Neßler both introduced elements associated with construction and physical labor into the exhibition space, relating the works directly to the unfinished and utilitarian character of the cellar.
